Ubiquitous Appliance

Computers today are almost as ubiquitous appliance as colored televisions. The main advantage of computers over televisions is versatility of use. Computers can be used as entertainment consoles such as in the case of playing computer games or in multimedia entertainment such as movie or music. On the other hand, personal computers also serve as office equipment. Computers are now indispensable tools of the workplace. It is unimaginable for most office workers to revert back to using typewriters in creating documents. Indeed, it would be very tedious and inconvenient to use typewriters instead of the word-processing programs of personal computers.Computers are also communication devices that allow the transfer and exchange of various types of data over telephone lines. Electronic mails and online chatting are the most popular form of computer communications. Through electronic mails or emails, individuals and even business organizations can exchange large amount of information almost instantly and at a great distance. Most homes today are connected to the internet via dial-up or broadband DSL connections. Computers at home also make it possible for some office works to be done offsite.
